What Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini Look For — The AI Readiness Score

4 min read

If a customer asked ChatGPT about your industry right now, would your business come up?

Most owners have no idea. Not because they haven't tried. Because nobody's told them what's actually being measured.

So we built a simple way to check. We call it the AI Readiness Score.

Why One Score, Three Platforms

Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini don't work identically. But they're solving the same core problem — finding trustworthy, well-structured information fast, and answering with confidence.

That overlap means the same fundamentals move the needle across all three. You don't need three separate strategies. You need one solid foundation.

The Four Categories We Score

Think of this as a quick self-audit. Each category is worth 25 points. Be honest with yourself here.

1. Content Clarity (out of 25)

Does your website answer real questions in plain language, near the top of the page?

Score yourself low if your homepage leads with taglines. Score high if a stranger could read your first paragraph and immediately understand what you do and for whom.

AI models extract answers. Vague writing simply doesn't get pulled.

2. Structured Data (out of 25)

Do you use schema markup for your services, FAQs, reviews, and business details?

This is the part most small business sites skip entirely. It's invisible to visitors but critical to machines trying to parse your page correctly.

If you've never touched schema, you're probably scoring close to zero here — and that's fixable fast.

3. Consistency and Trust Signals (out of 25)

Is your business name, address, and phone number identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and major directories?

Do you have real, recent reviews? A visible physical presence, not just a P.O. box and a logo?

AI models cross-reference before they cite. Mismatched details quietly disqualify you.

4. Freshness and Authority (out of 25)

When did you last publish something? Are older pages updated, or just left to age?

Do other credible sites reference or link to you?

AI tools favor sources that are active and validated by others, not just present.

Add It Up

90–100: You're in strong shape. Fine-tuning will help.

60–89: Solid foundation, but real gaps AI notices.

30–59: You're mostly invisible to AI search right now.

Below 30: Time to start from the ground up.

Most businesses we audit land between 30 and 60. That's not a bad place to be — it just means there's a clear, fixable gap.

Why This Matters More Every Month

Search behavior is shifting fast. People are asking AI tools directly instead of scrolling through ten blue links.

If your score is low, you're not just missing rankings. You're missing being part of the conversation entirely, before a customer ever sees your website.

A Real Case

A local clinic scored 35 when we first audited them. Weak schema, inconsistent listings, a homepage full of soft language instead of clear service descriptions.

We tackled it in order — clarity first, then structured data, then consistency cleanup. Reviews were already decent, so authority came along naturally.

Their score crossed 80 within two months. Not long after, they started showing up in AI-generated answers for treatments they offer locally.

The website didn't get flashier. It got clearer.

How This Connects to Everything Else We've Covered

The Bottom Line

You don't need to guess whether AI tools trust your brand. Score yourself honestly against these four categories, and you'll know exactly where the gaps are.

Clarity, structure, consistency, authority. Fix these in order, and the score climbs on its own.
