You've probably Googled your own business before, just to see where you land. But have you ever asked ChatGPT about yourself?
If not, you might be in for a surprise. A lot of brands that rank perfectly well on Google are completely missing from AI answers.
The good news is, you don't need a big audit or expensive tools to find out where you stand. You just need about 30 minutes and this simple checklist.
Let's get into it.

Step 1: Ask AI Directly About Your Brand (5 Minutes)
Start simple. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overview, and ask each one a basic question like "What is [your brand name]?"
Notice what happens. Does it describe you accurately? Does it mention your services correctly? Or does it hesitate, give vague information, or say it doesn't have enough details?
If the AI gets basic facts wrong or stays silent, that's your first real signal. You're not fully on its radar yet.
Step 2: Ask a Category Question, Not a Brand Question (5 Minutes)
This step matters even more than the first one. Ask something like "best [your service] provider in [your city]" without mentioning your own name.
Now check if you show up at all. This is the real test, because it tells you whether AI would recommend you naturally, without being prompted with your brand name first.
If your competitors show up here and you don't, that's the gap you actually need to close. We explained why this happens in our post on why your brand is invisible to AI even though you rank #1 on Google.
Step 3: Check Your Homepage's Structured Data (5 Minutes)
Head over to Google's Rich Results Test and paste in your homepage URL.
This tool shows you whether your website has proper schema markup, the structured code that helps machines understand what your business actually is.
If it comes back empty or shows errors, that's a technical gap worth fixing. We covered exactly why this matters in our post on schema, entities, and llms.txt.

Step 4: Search Your Brand Name in Google (5 Minutes)
Type your brand name into Google and scroll past your own website. Look at what else shows up, directories, news mentions, reviews, forum discussions.
AI models lean heavily on this kind of external mention when deciding whether to trust and recommend a brand.
If your own website is the only place your brand exists online, that's a real problem. AI has almost nothing else to confirm you're legitimate.
Step 5: Check If Your FAQ Content Answers Questions Directly (5 Minutes)
Open your own website and look at any FAQ or blog content you have. Read the first sentence after each question.
Does it answer directly and clearly, or does it wander into a story before getting to the point?
AI models pull answers from content that states things plainly and early. If your content builds up slowly, it's harder for AI to extract a clean answer from it. This is the exact gap that Answer Engine Optimization is designed to close, which we broke down in our AEO vs GEO vs SEO post.
Step 6: Check for a Google Business Profile and Reviews (5 Minutes)
Finally, check whether your Google Business Profile is complete, with accurate hours, categories, and recent reviews.
This might feel like a small, boring detail, but it feeds directly into how confidently AI can describe basic facts about your business.
A profile that's outdated or missing information is often why AI gets simple details about you wrong.
What Your 30-Minute Audit Just Told You
If you made it through all six steps, you now have a real, honest picture of where your brand stands with AI search.
You'll likely fall into one of three buckets. Either AI barely knows you exist, AI knows you but gets details wrong, or AI knows you but never recommends you over competitors.
Each of these is fixable, but they need slightly different approaches, which is exactly why we built a proper framework around this. You can go deeper with our AI Readiness Score post if you want a more complete picture.

Want a Faster Way to Track This?
Doing this manually every few months works, but it's easy to forget or deprioritize when things get busy.
This is exactly why we put together a proper AI visibility checklist as a downloadable resource, so you can run this audit anytime without hunting for the steps again.
If you haven't grabbed it yet, it's worth keeping on hand, especially if you're planning to revisit this audit quarterly.
The Bottom Line
Thirty minutes is all it takes to find out if your brand is actually visible where your customers are asking questions now, not just on Google, but on ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Overviews too.
If this audit uncovered gaps you're not sure how to fix, that's completely normal. It's exactly the kind of work we do for brands every day.
